Fulham have announced the capture of Southampton midfielder Shea Charles in a transfer worth a maximum of £30million.

The 22-year-old becomes the costliest Northern Ireland player in history after putting pen to paper on a five-year deal at Craven Cottage.

The package comprises £26million immediately with an additional £4million possible through performance-related clauses.

Charles, who began his professional journey at Manchester City, had also drawn interest from Leeds United but chose Fulham after Sasa Lukic’s £9million departure to Ipswich Town last week.

Charles said on Fulham’s official website that he was delighted to finally complete the move, noting the club has an excellent base throughout the organisation. He described it as a tremendous club with a clear plan that the manager outlined to him. He called it a significant honour to be there and expressed hope of launching his Premier League career at such a well-run club, adding that he hoped it would also please the supporters.

Charles becomes Fulham’s third acquisition since former Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa took charge.

The previous benchmark for a Northern Ireland player was the £15million Newcastle paid to acquire Jamal Lewis from Norwich in 2020.

Charles also becomes Fulham’s third priciest purchase overall, trailing only striker Gonzalo Garcia, who arrived from Real Madrid this month, and winger Kevin, signed from Shakhtar last summer. Both of those transfers were approximately £34million.

Since Arbeloa’s appointment following Marco Silva’s move to manage Benfica, Fulham have secured two players from Madrid, Garcia and midfielder Cesar Palacios, before landing Charles.

The Cottagers journey to Malaga on Wednesday before facing German side Stuttgart on Saturday, 15 August, and welcome Chelsea on Monday, 24 August in their Premier League opening fixture.
