Joe Bryan: Former Bristol City and Fulham defender retires aged 32

Joe Bryan announced his retirement from football on Tuesday. The 32-year-old defender made his senior debut in March 2012, playing for Bristol City against Leicester. Bryan, who operates as a left-back, accumulated 464 professional appearances across six clubs throughout his career. Of those, 44 came in the Premier League during his time with Fulham. He found the net on 32 occasions overall, with two of those goals coming in the 2020 Championship play-off final. Following his release from Millwall during the summer, Bryan decided to bring his playing career to a close. In a post shared on social media, Bryan expressed that while it may not have been the ideal conclusion everyone wishes for, he felt at ease with his choice to retire and begin a fresh chapter in his life. The defender progressed through the youth ranks at his hometown club Bristol City, where he also spent time on loan at Bath City and Plymouth Argyle. He would go on to make 230 appearances for the Robins across both the Championship and League One divisions. Bryan played a role in helping City advance to the League Cup semi-finals during the 2017-18 season, scoring against both Crystal Palace and Manchester United. In August 2018, Bryan was on the verge of a move to fellow Championship side Aston Villa but ultimately opted to join Fulham, who were competing in the Premier League. He remained with the club for five seasons, experiencing two relegations from the top flight, and made 119 appearances. After a temporary stint in France with Nice, Bryan transferred to Millwall in 2023, where he featured 81 times in the Championship before retiring.
